SELF PUBLISH, BE HAPPY: Self-Published Photobooks

By Jesús Rojas. March 8, 2012

Self Publish, Be Happy offers photographers all over the world a new way to publicize their work: make a photo book with them. The aim of this organisation is to promote the self-published books of artists eager to show their creations to the world. These publications would have many difficulties in finding a gap in the market if it weren’t for initiatives like this one; we all known how complicated it is to find a publishing house interested in the work of unknown photographers.

To have a look at some of the material that SP, BH has chosen from the editions sent by self-publishers, all you have to do is visit Book du Jour, a library where they show samples of the books, magazines and fanzines for everybody to see for free. You can also buy the controversial Self Publish, Be Naughty, the only official book published, for now, by this international organization based in London. It’s a collection of pictures which show, among other things, boys and girls in their birthday suit.

They say that these young artists represent a great segment of the contemporary art scene and, judging by the number of books crammed with pictures that we can now find in, there is no doubt that it is an upward trend.

To help all those artists interested in publishing their own books, these British entrepreneurs organise workshops that teach you how you edit your work, step by step. The next one will be held in Barcelona on the 28th and 29th April, so start preparing your lens.
