HAVALINA: 15 songs that define us

By Elia Maqueda. March 9, 2012

Havalina begins with a silent h that belongs to a language full of violent consonants. Havalina is gentle word and emotional noise. Manuel Cabezalí, Javier Couceiro and Ignacio Celma set the lights and shadows for this musical project that has been in motion for ten years now. There are only three pairs of hands, feet, eyes and ears pulling this cart of dried leaves, of this early summer imperfection.

Manuel Cabezalí chooses today for us a series of songs that have made Havalina sound the way they sound, talk of vital instincts and their consequences. That have made them be incandescent.

15 songs that define Havalina
by Manuel Cabezalí

These are songs that I think have much to do with Havalina, sometimes for their sound or composition (such as BRMC, Kyuss…), for the darkness of their atmosphere or lyrics (Depeche Mode, Nudozurdo...), for their vast landscape (Mogwai) or simply for the spirit of the song and the general idea of “reposed music” (as would be the case of Stephen Malkmus or The Cure).

Kyuss - Asteroid
Smashing Pumpkins - Hummer
Sonic Youth - Theresa's Sound World
Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Awake
Nudozurdo - Prometo Hacerte Daño
Depeche Mode - In Your Room
Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - 1% of One
Mogwai - I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead
Chucho - El Detonador EMX-3
