When you think of the space race, Zambia isn’t exactly the first place to come to mind. However, it’s in this African country that the story of The Afronauts is set. The book by photographer Cristina de Middel recounts the peculiar story of a country that (literally) wanted to send 'people and cats' into outer space. The first self-publication of The Afronauts was so popular that it sold out after a few months but it’s back again now in the form of an iPad app. The app was created by Ubicuo Studio and it breathes new life into the project while respecting the author’s concept and the sequence of the photos. The essence of the book has been maintained and an interactive facet has been added that invites readers to find out about and take part in this moment in Zambia’s history. The app was released on 17 April and you can find out more information about the project from its dedicated website.

Imagine a starry sky –that’s how the adventure begins– inviting you to take part using your iPad and to find out about the story of The Afronauts, that unlikely competitor in the race to space.
