ILUSTRAFIC: First International Illustration, Art and Visual Culture Conference

June 19, 2013

We perceive the world we live in with our eyes. Every day our retinas collect thousands of visual stimuli that our brains later process and turn into aesthetic pleasure or even horror. We need agoras and forums where we can share this passion though and Ilustrafic - amongst the best pieces of news this year in this regard - is one such conference. On 19, 20 and 21 June, Valencia will hold the First International Illustration, Art and Visual Culture Conference, which aims to be a biannual event. The initiative was founded by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and, while it is mainly geared towards students and professionals in the creative and illustration sector, it is also open to the general public.

Visitors to this first edition will be able to hear about the experiences of a wide range of artists, such as Nate Williams, who is linked to brands such as Coca Cola or Converse, French Jean Jullien, author of projects for Nike and BMW, Norwegian Bjorn Lie, specialised in children’s illustration, and Gemma Correll, contributor to The New York Times and The Observer. The talks, in which El Roto, the Spanish National Award for Illustration, and Mario Tascón, specialist in information architecture, will also participate, are complemented by practical workshops (collage, fashion illustration, printing techniques and more) and a forum of companies, including publishing houses such as Fulgencio Pimentel and Impedimenta.

If you’re an illustrator after a good manual that explains how to make your work more professional, we recommend Principios de ilustración, written by Lawrence Zeegen and published by Gustavo Gili. This practical volume shows you how to get the most out of your work by using guidelines and tricks when it comes to generating ideas, media and material resources, ways of presenting your portfolio to your clients and, above all, knowing which sectors of the market to aim at.
