WEBBY AWARDS: Honouring the best of the web

By Marta Díaz. May 21, 2012

The Webby Awards celebrate their 16th edition honouring excellence and innovation on the Internet with artistic and advertising initiatives, websites, social networks and apps that make life easier and prettier to the Internet user. The awards feature over 130 categories, each one with two honours: an award given by the official judges and a people’s voice award –for this edition it has gathered almost 1.5 million votes from over 200 countries. Although the award ceremony takes place today, 21st May, the list of nominees and winners was announced at the beginning of this month. David-Michel Davies, the executive director, pointed out that the winners “represent an amazing cross-section of the new and continuing trends we've seen across the Internet this year".

As expected, Facebook will not leave empty-handed. The world’s most powerful social network has been honoured with the People's Special Achievement For Social Change Award for its role in the 2011 Arab Spring. Pinterest, with its boards to organize and share all the beautiful things has bewitched the public for its visual design and the judges for the Social Media category. As for the special achievement awards, Instagram –the trendiest app of the year– has received one of the most important honours, Breakout of the Year. Björk and Louis C.K have been chosen artist and person of the year, respectively. Sites like Beetle.com, Dropbox, Google Music, Ben & Jerry’s or Babycenter deserve a special recognition since they managed to make public and jury agree, therefore receiving a double award.

The award ceremony of these “Internet Oscars” will take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom, in New York, hosted by the stand-up comedian Patton Oswalt and streaming online tonight for the whole world (5:30 pm in NYC). It won’t be so exciting since we already know the winners, but it will still be interesting to see how they manage to say ‘thank you’ in just five words this time. In previous editions this is what they did.
